National Weekend Rundown for May 21

Alyssa Wilson Inches Closer to All-Time Shot Put Leader Raven Saunders

Alyssa Wilson of Monsignor Donovan, New Jersey, threw the shot put 55-1.25 on Saturday at the Shore Conference Championships to improve her U.S. No. 2 all-time ranking and break her own state record.

The high school junior joins national high school record-holder Raven Saunders as the only other prep to throw over 55 feet in the event. Saunders' 2014 record stands at 56-8.25. Saunders, now at Ole Miss, won two NCAA titles and set the NCAA record in the event as a freshman at Southern Illinois University.

Wilson already ranked No. 2 all-time thanks to her 54-11 throw indoors at the Eastern States Championship. The new mark improves her outdoor best from 53-8.5, set two weeks ago at the Ocean County Championships, and is a new U.S. No. 1 ahead of Elena Bruckner (54-7) of Valley Christian, California.

She also won the discus with a throw of 158-11, an event in which she ranks U.S. No. 2 with a season-best of 175-10.
