Refugio Boys Execute Relay Sweep At UIL 2A State Meet

For Refugio to defend their state title from a year ago, it was going to take some work and execution.

Having Ernest Campbell as your anchor certainly helps some too. With the race still to be determined coming into the final leg, the Texas A&M committ left no doubt as he took the baton and ran away from the competition. The team of Chai Whitmire, Jaedyn Lewis, Jason Moore and Campbell won with a time of 42.15.

On the inside lane, Crawford was in contention but snuck into second thanks to a strong anchor leg from Huston Powers.

Following last year's fifth place finish, Marlin bounced back this season and took the final podium spot with a time of 42.60.

2A Boys 4x200 relay

It was going to requite quite the effort for Refugio to dethrone defending state champion Mason in the 2A Boys 4x200-meter relay.

Yet, with the final result still up in the air heading into the final leg, Ernest Campbell brought Refugio home for another win. They won with a time of 1:28.22 over last year's state champions.

Mason was in the mix for another gold up until the final 50 meters but the defending state champions held on to second.

Beckville made up some ground on the inside lane with a third place finish and time of 1:29.74.

Just like expected, the 2A Boys mile relay came down to the wire with about five teams in the mix in the final leg.

Refugio completed the sweep of the relays with a strong anchor by Jason Moore. The squad of Mikel Brown, Isaiah Avery, Chai Whitmire and Moore crossed the line with a time of 3:21.69.

It wasn't an easy win, however. They had to overcome a strong first leg from several other teams.

Sonora jumped claimed their spot on the podium with second place finish through a strong effort that had them in first following the first two legs.

Falls City went from fifth to third in the final leg to finish on the podium with a time of 3:22.48.
